Prenatal Cardiac Care

There are many reasons why your obstetrician may want a closer look at your unborn baby's heart.

The fetal cardiologists here at NYU are part of a larger, coordinated team that includes your obstretrician, and may include perinatologists, genetics specialists, neonatologists, and pediatric cardiac surgeons who can help care for you and your baby.

Several of the indications for a fetal echocardiogram include:

  • An abnormal anatomy scan, suspicion of an abnormality of the fetal heart
  • Irregular fetal heartbeat
  • Noncardiac anomalies or suspicion of a genetic syndrome
  • Maternal conditions that increase the risk of a fetal heart problem, such as certain medications and some autoimmune diseases, including lupus
  • Family history of a congenital heart defect
