The Pediatric Clinic at Bellevue Hospital is fortunate to have the services of an experienced Pediatric Audiologist, as well as a well-equipped Audiology booth, right on site.

Residents will meet the Audiologist in her office for discussion, and directly observe, from within the booth, Audiology evaluations for several patients. The Audiologist is located in the Bellevue Hospital Pediatric Clinic.

During this time block, the resident will:

  • Directly observe, from an Audiology booth, accompanied by a licensed audiologist, the following methods for hearing testing in children:

    • children aged 4 months to 2-1/2 years - Conditioned Orientation Response (COR) Audiometry
    • children aged 2-1/2 to 5 years - Play Audiometry
  • Acquire an understanding of how to interpret an audiogram, and, with the audiologist, review the audiogram of each child who was tested, and review selected case studies to illustrate conductive, sensorineural, unilateral and bilateral hearing loss.
  • Further their understanding of audiogram interpretation through a discussion of air conduction, bone conduction and the masking principles involved with audiometry.

Role of the Resident

The resident will:

  • Directly observe, and actively participate in the discussions with the audiologist.
  • Provide medical input and clarification when necessary in the discussion of individual patients.
