Child Protection Program & Fellowship

NYU Langone’s Child Protection Program evaluates children for abuse and neglect within a developmental framework and in a child-focused environment at the Frances L. Loeb Child Protection and Development Center at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. The program consists of a multidisciplinary team that includes physicians, social workers, a child life specialist, and a psychologist who work together to provide medical consultation for the New York City Administration for Children’s Services, community agencies, and other medical providers.

Program research focuses on child physical abuse and psychological maltreatment; child sexual abuse, including reporting and outcomes; abuse of children with disabilities; medical neglect; fatalities; and death review.

The program also offers educational opportunities for fellows and residents.

Child Abuse Pediatrics Fellowship

The Child Protection Program team at NYU Langone and Bellevue collaborates with the Child Abuse Pediatrics Fellowship at Maimonides Children’s Hospital to provide comprehensive clinical and research training that prepares fellows for an academic and clinical career in child abuse pediatrics.

Resident Education

The Child Protection Program offers two- or four-week electives for residents, who learn to evaluate children for abuse at the Loeb Center at Bellevue and at Hassenfeld Children’s Hospital—34th Street.

Residents also visit community agencies to learn about the multidisciplinary nature of child abuse evaluations. The program is available year-round. For more information, please contact Lori A. Legano, MD, program director, at lori.legano@nyulangone.org.
