Message From Michael Weitzman
As a native New Yorker it has been great to return home and be the Chair of Pediatrics at New York University School of Medicine.
After graduating from Brooklyn College, I ventured north to Syracuse for medical school and pediatric residency training. I received my training in epidemiology and public health at the Harvard School of Public Health and I then stayed in Boston for many years working in general pediatrics (Director of General Pediatrics at Boston City Hospital and Boston University School of Medicine) and public health (Director of Maternal and Child Health for the City of Boston).
We then moved to the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry where I served as Associate Chair of Pediatrics, Director of General Pediatrics and Director of the fellowship training program in Academic General Pediatrics and then was the first Executive Director of the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Center for Child Health Research.
I have been an advocate for children and pediatricians my entire career. What an honor it is for me to now serve as the Chair of Pediatrics at the institution where Pediatrics was born.
Many, if not most of us look back fondly on the years we spent training to be pediatricians. Many of us made lifelong friends during those critical years, and we carry the memories and skills obtained during that period with us forever. Many of us also look forward eagerly to reunions, receptions at national meetings, and written updates about our colleagues and training program.
It is my great pleasure to name Harris Burstin, M.D. as our new Director of Physician and Alumni Relations. After serving in an exemplary fashion as our residency program site director at Tisch Hospital for many years, Dr. Burstin will be creating and overseeing a dynamic Alumni Relations Program that we hope will make all of you feel more connected to the program where you first experienced being a pediatrician.
I reach out to all of you and I hope to meet you soon.
Michael Weitzman, M.D.
